How Wild Things Rescue Started<\/strong><\/h2>

While working in a vet practice, our founder Lucy, saw lots of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals come in needing help. Initially, animals were just triaged and Lucy would transport them to a nearby wildlife rescue. This meant that occasionally animals would stay for a few days, allowing Lucy and the others in the vets to learn more about their needs.<\/p>

Knowing the strain on other rescues, Lucy started to care for the \u2018easier\u2019 cases under the guidance of other rehabbers, starting with hedgehogs before moving on to take in birds too. As word spread, Lucy got busier as a solo rehabber and decided it was time to create a better system.<\/p>

Wild Things Rescue officially started in 2016 and was named Weetabix\u2019s Wildlife after a little blind hedgehog who stole our hearts. We changed our name to Wild Things Rescue later down the line.<\/p>

Working alongside vets in the county, Wild Things quickly went from strength to strength. At this point, Wild Things operated as a fostering system, with dedicated fosterers around the county.<\/p>

In 2018 Wild Things Rescue became a community interest company, with the intention of using our new structure to raise funds and expand the rescue. Unfortunately, this structure was limiting and the leap was finally taken to become a registered charity in 2020.<\/p>

In 2022, Wild Things signed a 5-year lease on a property, enabling us to open our first Wildlife Centre! Here, we could accommodate a variety of birds and mammals, allowing us to help more animals and train more volunteers!<\/p>

We operate using a fostering system which enables more stressed animals such as rabbits, hares and birds of prey to be kept in completely isolated, quiet conditions. This year we have opened our very first wildlife centre near Boston! Over time this will become our base and will mean we can have volunteers on site to help with and learn about wildlife.<\/p>

Wild Things Rescue also has a lovely release site where we are able to ensure that animals are well adapted to the wild, in huge, spacious enclosures, before they regain their freedom. Our release site also has facilities for volunteers which was funded by the National Lottery, to allow us to spend more time there and care for the animals better.<\/p>

Our charity is run entirely on donation and we really need your help to keep going. The cost of running a wildlife rescue is incredibly high and we need to raise approximately \u00a34000 per month to keep going.<\/p>

Costs we need to cover include:<\/p>

  • Vets bills - medications, examinations and procedures.<\/p><\/li>

  • Food bills - making sure everyone is well fed! Some emergency care food is very expensive!<\/p><\/li>

  • Disposable items - needles, syringes and gloves. These items help us to maintain good biosecurity.<\/p><\/li>

  • Rent and utilities - Over the next few years we aim for our centre to become a vital central point for wildlife casualties in Lincolnshire.<\/p><\/li>
